The grocery industry is in need of a shakeup. With the cost of groceries continuing to climb, food insecurity throughout Victoria is at an all-time high and we want to do our part to address this need.
For the past 5 years, BCause has been on a mission to make groceries more affordable and now, we’re taking it to the next level.
We’ve ditched our for-profit roots and have become a non-profit, The BCause Foundation, with the goal of opening Victoria’s first non-profit grocery store.
BCause is building a better grocery store in Victoria. One that lowers food costs, reduces food insecurity, and puts people before profit through a community-powered model. We exist to change how food systems work.

What is a Non-Profit Grocery Store?
Imagine a grocery store that didn’t have shareholders. A store that operated as a service to the community instead of a corporation.
Think of a place where you could find fresh produce, high-quality meats, a cheeky treat and that locally-made product you’ve never seen before.
Now imagine that store using all funds generated not to enrich the executives but to keep grocery prices as low as possible for everyone.
That is BCause.

More families than ever are experiencing food insecurity across Canada. The rising costs of living has left no province or territory unaffected. Percentage change of total visits to Canadian Food Banks from 2019 - 2025 saw a 99.4% increase.
